Wine Before Breakfast is for hungry people.
If you are full,
if you are satisfied with yourself,
if the world is as it should be,
if you’ve got it all together,
then why get up early to go to church?
On a Tuesday of all things!
At 7.22!
No, you’veĀ got to be hungry to come to WBB.
You’ve got to have that gnawing hunger in your soul,
in your heart.
And you’ve got to be thirsty.
You need to have a sense of parched lips,
in a parched land.
Jesus puts it this way:
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst
for righteousness, for they will be filled.”
Hunger and thirst.
Two most primal longings.
Food and drink.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst
for righteousness,
for justice
as if their life depended on it.
If you hunger and thirst like that,
then the promise is clear,
“they will be filled.”
At WBB we never get totally filled.
But maybe we get a taste for what that will be like.
Maybe we get a foretaste for that filling,
that righteousness,
that justice,
that is the Kingdom of God.
A loaf of bread, a jug of wine,
and you.
Tuesday morning at 7.22.
Wycliffe College Chapel
Judith presiding,
Deb Whelan singing,
