Graduate Christian Fellowship – The Ethics of Prenatal Genetic Screening

The Ethics of Prenatal Genetic Screening:
Medical Issues – Personal Stories

with Michael Buttrey
PhD student in Biomedical Ethics, Regis College

Thursday, November 8, 2012

Hello friends,
Michael Buttrey is a doctoral student in theology at Regis College here at U of T, and this Thursday he will be sharing a bit of his story and some of his Master’s work on the ethics of prenatal screening. Growing up as a “first generation” Mennonite with interests in science and encounters with medicine, Michael ended up studying genetics in his undergraduate at the University of Alberta. After shifting gears to study theology at Regent College in Vancouver, he discovered his interests could be united through the study of medical ethics from a Christian perspective. His thesis was titled “How the Practice of Infant Baptism Questions the Paradigm of Prenatal Screening,” and instead of discussing the ethics of abortion and the status of embryos, he argues that Christian practices (like baptism and child dedication) can help form our desires around genetic screening.

Please join us Thursday night for a lively and engaging conversation, and feel free to invite any friends you know who might be interested.

Shalom,
Geoff
